Purpose and Aim:

To explore techniques for joining wood in carpentry.


The learner will: The learner can:
1.  Know ways of joining wood.
1.1 Identify different types of frame joints.
1.2 Identify other ways in which wood can be joined.
1.3 Indicate which type should be used for a particular purpose.
2.  Be able to prepare for creating a wooden joint.
2.1 Identify joints to be created.
2.2 Identify materials required to create joints and their characteristics.
3.  Be able to use different methods for joining wood.
3.1 Demonstrate different methods for joining wood.
3.2 Use personal protection clothes and equipment.
3.3 Use tools and materials following safe working practices.
3.4 Clean and return tools and equipment after use.

Assessment Information:

AC1.1 A minimum of three different types of frame joints.

AC1.2 A minimum of three ways.

AC1.3 A minimum of three purposes.

AC2.1 A minimum of three different types of joints – at least one should be a frame joint.

AC2.2 This should include for example the type of adhesive required, the size of screws, nails etc.

AC3.1 A minimum of two different methods
