1. Understand the value of water as a garden feature.
1.1 Describe how water features may provide additional interest to the garden, e.g., a habitat for wildlife, sound and movement.
2. Understand the factors to be considered in siting and constructing a pool.
2.1 Describe practical and aesthetic considerations in pool design, including aspect, access, visibility and shape.
2.2 Describe the safety factors to be considered when designing a pond.
2.3 Describe the construction of a pool using concrete, a flexible liner or a pre-formed shape.
2.4 Describe the differences between a formal and informal pool.
3. Know water plants suitable for a pool.
3.1 Identify the main categories of water plants, e.g., oxygenators, marginals.
3.2 Describe a number of plants from each category.
3.3 Describe how to plant water plants.
3.4 Create a planting scheme for a pool, taking account of the above factors.
4. Understand the maintenance of a water garden.
4.1 Prepare a seasonal plan of routine maintenance of water plants.
4.2 Explain how to maintain clear water in a pool, e.g., cover of pond surface, siting, daphnia.
