Purpose and Aim

To develop basic skills for knitting and a knowledge of how the choice of yarn and needles will affect the final product.

1. Know equipment and materials required for knitting
1.1 List equipment required for knitting
1.2 List different types of yarns that can be used for knitting
1.3 Outline how the thickness of the yarn and choice of needles will affect the appearance of the knitting produced
2. Be able to produce basic knitting stitches
2.1 Demonstrate  a range of knitting stitches
2.2 Create a range of knitted items
2.3 Create tension squares for different combinations of yarns and needles
3. Be able to read information on a simple knitting pattern
3.1 Identify abbreviations used for the stitches in AC2.1
3.2 Follow knitting instructions.

 

Assessment Methods:

There are no prescribed assessment methods for this unit. Assessments used should be fit for purpose for the unit and learners, and generate evidence of achievement for all the assessment criteria.

Assessment Information:

AC2.1 A minimum of six different stitches to include:

� casting on

� knit

� purl

� slip stitch

� knitting two stitches together

� casting off.

 

AC2.2 This should include at least three different shapes to include a:

� square

� triangle

� rectangle.

 

AC2.3 A minimum of four different tension squares.

 

AC3.2 At this level these need only be basic instructions that include the terms introduced in AC3.1.

If not specifically stated in the assessment information, a plural statement in any assessment criterion means a minimum of two.

 

Assessor Requirements:

There is no information regarding specific assessor requirements for this unit. Centres should select assessors who are trained in assessment, and who have subject specific competence to assess at this level.
