Purpose and Aim:

To provide knowledge of the use of essential oils in aromatherapy massage.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The learner will: The learner can:
1.  Understand safe practice in the use of essential oils for aromatherapy massage.
1.1 Identify ethical approaches in holistic therapies.
1.2 Identify contraindications in the use of essential oils for aromatherapy massage.
1.3 Identify how to check essential oils before use.
2.  Know the background to aromatherapy.
2.1 Identify the history of aromatherapy.
2.2 Outline what is meant by a holistic approach to using essential oils in aromatherapy massage.
3.  Know the benefits of essential oils used in aromatherapy massage.
3.1 Identify the benefits of essential oils used in aromatherapy massage.
4.  Be able to blend essential oils for aromatherapy massage.
4.1 Identify the properties of essential oils.
4.2 Demonstrate how to measure and blend oils.

 

Assessment Methods:

Assessment Information:

AC1.1 Ethical approaches will include the following:

  • Health and safety of self
  • Health and safety of others
  • Safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults
  • Hygiene and minimising the spread of infections
  • Confidentiality and data protection
  • Dignity
  • Respecting equality and diversity.

AC1.2 A minimum of four contraindications must be given.

AC3.1 A minimum of four benefits must be given.

AC4.1 A minimum of four essential oils must be given.

Assessment of 4.2 must only take place in a supervised classroom setting and must include a minimum of three blends.

Assessor Requirements:

Assessors of this unit must be occupationally competent practitioners of aromatherapy whose qualifications are recognised by the CNHC for voluntary registration purposes, and which meet the standards set  by recognised  professional bodies, in this case the FHT.
