Purpose and Aim

To introduce the skills for manicure and pedicure

The learner can

1. Know basic anatomy needed for manicures and pedicures.
1.1 Identify the structure of nails.
1.2 Identify the basic anatomy of areas of massage.
2. Know health and safety measures required for manicures and pedicures.
2.1 Outline reasons for good hygiene practices when providing manicures and pedicures.
2.2 Outline possible contraindications of manicures and pedicures.
2.3 Outline possible contraindications of massaging arms, hands, legs and feet.
2.4 Outline measures to deal with incidents resulting from manicures and pedicures.
3. Be able to provide care for cuticles during manicures and pedicures.
3.1 Apply appropriate products to cuticles during pedicures and manicures.
3.2 Push back cuticle.
3.3 Use cuticle knife correctly.
3.4 Use cuticle nippers.
4. Be able to provide nail care during pedicures and manicures.
4.1 Use correct filing method during pedicures and manicures.
4.2 Apply buffing cream.
4.3 Use correct techniques for buffing.
5. Be able to carry out massages.
5.1 Perform arm and hand massages.
5.2 Perform foot and leg massages.
5.3 Demonstrate full range of massage movements.
6. Be able to apply nail enamel during manicures and pedicures.
6.1 Apply base coat.
6.2 Apply nail enamel.
6.3 Apply top coat.

Assessment Methods:

There are no prescribed assessment methods for this unit. Assessments used should be fit for purpose for the unit and learners, and generate evidence of achievement for all the assessment criteria.
