Purpose and Aim:

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The learner will: The learner can:
1.  Identify different components of a computer system and their uses.
1.1 Explain the difference between hard disk and a floppy disk.
1.2 Explain in simple terms an input device.
1.3 Explain in simple terms an output device.
1.4 Explain in simple terms hardware in association with a personal computer.
1.5 Explain in simple terms software in association with a personal computer.
1.6 Explain in simple terms the following: ROM, RAM, CPU, Byte, Megabyte, Kilobyte.
2.  Use a standard keyboard associated with a personal computer.
2.1 Identify the different groups of keys on the keyboard in use.
3.  Use basic file management functions.
3.1 Explain in simple terms, data files.
3.2 Create a directory.
3.3 Delete unwanted files from a directory.
3.4 Rename a data file.
3.5 Use the correct procedure to start up and close down the system.
4.  Store and retrieve data using various suitable applications.
4.1 Create a new application file.
4.2 Save and retrieve application files.
5.  Use the simple functions of a word processor.
5.1 Insert and delete text.
5.2 Use alignment features.
5.3 Print a document.
6.  Use a simple spreadsheet.
6.1 Distinguish between the basic concepts of a spreadsheet: rows, columns, cells, formulae.
6.2 Using a simple spreadsheet (provided), edit figures.
6.3 Insert and delete columns and rows.
6.4 Use a simple formula to make calculations.
6.5 Replicate cells using appropriate method.
6.6 Change column widths.
6.7 Print a spreadsheet.
7.  Use a simple database.
7.1 Distinguish between the basic concepts of records, fields, text and numerical data.
7.2 Using a simple database (provided), browse , go to a record and edit the data within a record.
7.3 Add a record.
7.4 Delete a record.
7.5 Sort the file alphabetically or numerically.
7.6 Use simple search criteria.
7.7 Print from a database.
8.  Safeguard data on a floppy disk against loss or corruption.
8.1 Explain the procedures for correct storing and handling of disks.
8.2 Demonstrate how to secure a floppy disk by using the write-protect facility.
8.3 Make a back-up copy of a file.
9.  Identify relevant health and safety measures while using a personal computer.
9.1 State 5 principles of good practice related to safety and comfort.
